Part Three

Actions of Hope

In what would become Wisconsin there is a hilltop. The bald bones of it crowned by thin pines. Its sandy soil a sandy remnant from the bottom of an ancient lake formed by a memory of ice once two miles thick.

Part Four

Symphony of Hope

The drumming rises to a pitch great enough to pierce the veil of the vastness, singing voices following. And all the lights in the vastness sit silent. Watching. Waiting.

Who is Jasper Woods?

Jasper Woods is a son of the western Kansas plains and a Dane by ancestry. His first memory is of a tumbleweed blowing down a dry run of road through his neighborhood, tin homes full of black velvet paintings of Elvis and Spanish Bulls. Nomadic most of his life, Jasper roamed across much of the Midwest including Kansas, Oklahoma, Iowa, and Wisconsin with brief stints in Oregon and Vermont. He writes climate-focused speculative fiction and believes the identity of all people of Big Blue must be honored and once we get on to getting along as people, we can get on to healing our home here in the goldilocks zone of the vastness.

“Standing near the fire surrounded by its light, Shyaklá gazes across the arc of her community. Their faces still and waiting.”
